Chicago Public Schools Strike for the First time on 25 Years
With over 30,000 teachers and staff and an estimated 400,000 students not in Chicago Public schools today, after their union and school officials failed to reach a contract agreement, this is Chicago’s first teacher strike in 25 years.
Some thoughts/bullet points:
- This is obviously not a good scenario for both parties; first and foremost, the kids to be without schooling as being almost “innocent bystanders” in this situation and the Chicago Teachers Union fighting for their rights to have stability with their jobs, for the better of the students, as a long term goal in mind.
- 1797 was the year that the first strike in America was documented at Albert Gallatin’s Glassworks as strikes have been around for over 200 years as a tactic of a “last straw” attempt. Your history lesson for today, kids, brought to you by overindulgentgirl.tumblr.com and wikipedia. You’re welcome.
- Thoughts are going out to all parties as this has much more than a mere effect on the city let alone friends and families of thousands of our residents.
- Teachers shape our future leaders, doctors, Mothers, and children, so a quick resolution is hopeful as we wait and see how this unfolds.
